f you’re planning a holiday to play golf in America, don’t let the fact that you’ve never heard of a destination put you off! Because while Kiawah Island in South Carolina might not have been top of your golf vacation wish list, the experts at A Golfing Experience are here to tell you that it really should be.
Get Ready for the Wow Factor
If you’ve got a yearning to get away from it all and really feel like you’re immersed in nature, this destination is truly one of the most beautiful places to play golf in America. The landscape takes in sweeping beaches, rolling sand dunes, lush marshlands and tranquil wooded forests, as well as the five (yes, five!) magnificent courses on which to showcase your game. Kiawah provides a wealth of opportunities to get out into nature and enjoy a
range of recreational activities, eco-adventures and wildlife based excursions.
Kayaking and Paddleboarding
Getting out and about on a kayak or paddleboard can get you to some wonderful places here. You can hire single or tandem kayaks and head out with or without a guide to explore the surrounding ocean and salt marshes. The range of guided paddle tours are highly recommended and include options like Twilight Paddling, Marsh Kayaking and Tidal Trip and Dip (all around two hours long). If this is something you’ve always wanted to try, there’s truly no better place to do it than the marshlands of the Kiawah River or the gentle surrounding ocean waters. Lessons are available, followed by a tour.
One of the most popular activities (apart from golf of course!) is an inspiring eco-tour of the inlets on a specially-built boat to enjoy a close encounter with the Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that make their homes among the creeks and marshes. The dolphins can be seen in abundance, both in the surrounding ocean and the inland waterways, and boat tours with an experienced biologist are offered all year round.
Land-Based Nature Tours
There are plenty of other ways to get to know the huge array of wildlife on the island as well. How does an Alligator Adventure sound? This guided (and safe) activity is an amazing way to observe and learn more about the largest reptile in North America. You’ll travel around their island habitats with a naturalist to see them in action in ponds and creeks, and find out fascinating facts about the hatchlings’ and the adults’ lifestyle.
If you fancy something a little less bold, Birding for Beginners is a superb introduction to the basics of – you guessed it – birding. On a relaxing walking tour, you’ll stroll through a range of habitats and learn all about the local avian inhabitants.
